Biography
Soe Hok Gie was a Chinese Indonesian activist who apposed the successive dictatorships of President Soekarno and Soeharto.Childhood
Since childhood, Soe Hoek Gie has loved reading literature work by Ananta Toer, Chairil Anwar, and others. That is what adds his insight about literature.
When he wants to advance to 9th grade, Soe Hok Gie experienced an obstacle because he had to repeat to 8th grade. But he didn't want to repeat and had to move to another junior high school. It was at this time that he wrote his heart's confusion in his diary. Soe Hok Gie started writing his diary since he was in junior high school. This book will raise his name in the future.
Adolescence
After graduating from middle school, he managed to enter the Senior High School majoring in literature.
It was during high school that Soe Hok Gie's interest in literature grew deeper, and at the same time he became interested in history. In addition, political awareness began to rise. From here, the beginning of recording his interesting journey; sharp writing and full of criticism.
Critical of the government
When studying at UI, he criticized President Ir Soekarno's policies a lot. In addition he also criticized a lot about the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) which at that time was very developed in Indonesia.
The death of Soe Hok Gie in Semeru Mountain
Soe Hok Gie died at Mount Semeru in 1969 just the day before his 27th birthday. The cause of Soe Hok Gie's death was due to breathing in poisonous smoke on the mountain.
He died with his colleague, Idhan Dhanvantari Lubis. Furthermore, the notes during the Mount Semeru vanished along with the death of Gie on the top of the mountain.
On December 24, 1969 Gie was buried in the Menteng Pulo cemetery, but two days later was transferred to the Kober Pekuburan, Tanah Abang.
